Founder and Trustee, The Tindall Foundation

Established to focus New Zealand on:  Improving the performance of families and social services; supporting community-based initiatives that create employment and encourage enterprise; supporting the environment and preserving biodiversity; strengthening the Third (Community) sector and; promoting generosity and giving.  The Tindall Foundation has to date provided over $127m (after paying tax on its income) to assist these initiatives on a “hand-up not hand-out” basis.

Investor in New Zealand Enterprises

Through K1W1 Ltd and other vehicles has invested over $150M Seed and Venture capital into a large number of start-up and early stage businesses from Biotech, environmental technology, electronics, high tech, software and other high export potential businesses.

Founder and Trustee, Alay Buhay Educational Foundation

Founded by Stephen in 1982 the Alay Buhay Foundation has a “hand-up not a hand-out” philosophy to teach families in the Philippines how to manage themselves into micro financed businesses. The Foundation has been helping up to 2,300 families per year.


Career History

Twelve years with retailer George Court & Sons, a 100 year old full line department store group.

In 1982 founded The Warehouse, a private company until late 1994 when it floated on the New Zealand Stock Exchange. Held the position of Managing Director until January 2001, then appointed CEO and assumed position of Founder. Returned as Group CEO from May 2003 until October 2004.  The Warehouse Group now has 93 retail, 77 Noel Leeming and 67 Warehouse Stationery stores in New Zealand. Sales in excess of $2.9 billion.
