Sir Stephen Tindall’s personal goal is to help New Zealanders realise their full potential for the overall benefit of New Zealand. He is the Founder and Director of The Warehouse Group Ltd and Co-Founder and Trustee of The Tindall Foundation.
The Warehouse was founded as a private company in 1982 and floated on the New Zealand Stock Exchange in 1994. Sir Stephen held the position of Managing Director until January 2001, when a CEO was appointed, and he took on the position of Founder. He returned as Group CEO from May 2003 until October 2004. The Warehouse Group now has 93 retail, 77 Noel Leeming and 67 Warehouse Stationery stores in New Zealand, with sales exceeding $2.9 billion.
Sir Stephen and Lady Margaret established The Tindall Foundation to help focus New Zealand on improving the performance of families and social services; supporting community-based initiatives that create employment and encourage enterprise; supporting the environment and preserving biodiversity; strengthening the volunteer and community sector; and promoting generosity and giving. To date, The Tindall Foundation has provided over $164m (after paying tax on its income) to assist these initiatives on a “hand-up not hand-out” basis.
Sir Stephen is also an investor in various New Zealand enterprises, having invested over $150 million seed and venture capital into over 200 start ups and early stage businesses including biotech, environmental technology, electronics, high tech, software and other high export potential businesses. He is also Founder of Alay Buhay Educational Foundation, teaching families in the Philippines how to manage themselves into micro financed businesses. He is also Chair of Emirates Team New Zealand, enjoying a long association with the team and involvement in day to day management.
Sir Stephen is the recipient of numerous personal awards including the 2019 Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, 2015 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year, 2009 Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, 2007 Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, 2006 Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award and the 2005 Deloitte/Management Magazine ‘Visionary Leader’ Award, to name a few.
